The new pedestrian overpass is now in place at Waurn Ponds Station.
The structure was installed overnight on Saturday 5 June as part of works during a nine-day construction blitz on the Geelong and Warrnambool lines.
The 46-metre overpass was constructed by Brunton Engineering and was assembled in the closed car park in the weeks leading up to it being lifted into place.
Metcalf Crane Services supplied the 650-tonne crane that towered over the station, safely moving the structure into its final position above the rail line at Waurn Ponds. The crane itself took three days to construct, in preparation for the overpass lift.
The overpass is part of the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade and will provide an accessible link to the new second platform at the completion of the project, with works now underway on the stairs, ramps and lifts to link to the overpass.
Work on the new second track is continuing at Waurn Ponds, with the duplicated track now extending over the level crossing at Ghazeepore Road. Signalling upgrades and a new pedestrian crossing were also completed during the June disruption on the line.
The upgrades to Waurn Ponds Station form part of the Regional Rail Revival program, which is upgrading every passenger rail line in the state and creating 3,000 jobs. The project is part of the Australian and Victorian governments’ more than $1 billion investment in the staged upgrade of the Geelong Line, including the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication and Waurn Ponds stabling.
