Train services return early on Gippsland Line

Posted: 26 Jan 2020

Passengers on the Gippsland Line will be back on trains from Monday with a major works blitz set to be completed four days ahead of schedule.

We thank passengers for their patience this month while vital work on the half-a-billion dollar Gippsland Line Upgrade has taken place, helping to deliver better and more reliable services for Gippsland passengers.

Construction on the new Avon River Bridge was carried out while works continued on the Metro Tunnel and work also got underway to improve drainage on the line between Morwell and Bairnsdale.

V/Line has also undertaken track maintenance during this time. This critical work will ensure trains can continue to operate efficiently and reliably.

Crews working on the new Avon River Bridge built embankments for the foundation of the new track that will connect the new bridge to the existing line on either side of the river.

These works were completed ahead of schedule, minimising noise and traffic disruptions for Stratford locals.

The new $95 million Avon River rail bridge will allow trains to safely travel at up to 90km/h, a massive improvement on the 10km/h speed limit currently in place on the existing bridge.
