June works on Geelong and Warrnambool lines

Posted: 20 May 2021

Works are taking shape on the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade and Warrnambool Line Upgrade, with key features of both projects to be the focus while coaches replace trains between Warrnambool and Geelong from Saturday 5 June to Sunday 13 June.

A key highlight of the June works will be the installation of a new pedestrian overpass at Waurn Ponds Station, with the 46-metre structure to be lifted into place.

Constructed by Brunton Engineering in Somerton, the overpass will provide a link to the new second platform once the project is complete.

Work on the new second track will continue at Waurn Ponds, with local traffic, pedestrian and cycling detours in place while the duplicated track is extended over the level crossing at Ghazeepore Road. Signalling upgrades and a new pedestrian crossing will also be completed while the level crossing is closed from Saturday 5 June to Thursday 10 June to complete the works.

Work will also take place on the Warrnambool Line during the disruption, with track installation to continue for the Boorcan crossing loop. More than 15,000 tonnes of ballast and 3,300 sleepers will be laid during construction of the 2.2km loop, with the introduction of the loop to improve reliability of the Warrnambool Line, allowing services to recover from unexpected delays more quickly.

Signalling upgrades will also continue during the June disruption, with more than 24 kms of cable installed across seven locations including Winchelsea, Camperdown, Colac, Birregurra, Terang, Warncoort and Waurn Ponds to provide a boost to safety along the line. Signalling works will start later this month at Warrnambool and Sherwood Park stations.

Passengers are asked to allow extra time and plan ahead for their journeys, as departure times may vary. Find out if you’re affected at bigbuild.vic.gov.au or by calling 1800 800 007.

The upgrades to Waurn Ponds Station and the Warrnambool Line form part of the Regional Rail Revival program, which is upgrading every passenger rail line in the state and creating 3,000 jobs. Rail Projects Victoria is delivering the program on behalf of the Australian and Victorian governments.
