Rail Projects Victoria is seeking contractors to deliver the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication, with Expressions of Interest now open.

The successful contractors will design and build key components of the project on the state’s busiest regional rail line, with some of Australia’s leading construction companies already signalling interest during market sounding in late 2020.

The project will create local jobs and provide more frequent and reliable train services for South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds passengers.

Around 8km of track will be duplicated and signalling will be upgraded between South Geelong and Waurn Ponds to allow trains to pass each other in this section. These critical upgrades will help boost service frequency and improve reliability on the line, including five trains per hour at peak times for South Geelong, Marshall and Waurn Ponds passengers.

Level crossings at Fyans Street and Surf Coast Highway will be removed, helping to reduce congestion and improve safety for the more than 70 trains and approximately 36,000 vehicles currently using these busy intersections each day.

Passengers using South Geelong and Marshall stations can look forward to upgraded facilities including new second platforms and track, and accessible overpasses.

Expressions of Interest for the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication close in March 2021, with more information available at tenders.vic.gov.au

The South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication is part of the more than $1 billion investment by the Australian and Victorian governments in rail upgrades between Geelong and Waurn Ponds as part of Regional Rail Revival, including the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade and Waurn Ponds stabling.
