Passengers travelling between Ararat and Ballarat are being asked to plan ahead for service changes in December, as major construction on the Ballarat Line Upgrade moves towards completion by the end of the year.
Coaches will replace trains between Ararat, Beaufort, Wendouree and Ballarat for part or all of the journey from Saturday 7 December until Friday 13 December to enable vital works to be carried out on the upgrade. Trains will continue to run between Maryborough, Ballarat and Southern Cross Station.
This will allow workers to complete Wendouree Station’s new platform and build the second track through the Gillies Street level crossing.
The work will also affect motorists, with the Gillies Street level crossing closed from Saturday 7 December to Monday 9 December between Gregory Street and Howitt Street. Traffic and pedestrian detours will be in place.
Passengers are being advised to allow an extra 15 minutes travel time and to plan their journey at vline.com.au or by calling 1800 800 007.
Following these works and commissioning in 2020, trains will be able to pass each other at Wendouree Station. This means delayed services from Melbourne won’t terminate at Ballarat with passengers having to finish their journey on replacement coaches.
There will be a period of commissioning next year before the introduction of more new services in 2020. Once the project is complete, it will enable much-needed extra peak services and trains every 40 minutes in the off-peak, as well as improved reliability and better stations, for growing communities along the line.
