Journeys in the state’s south-west will be safer for motorists and train passengers thanks to four level crossing upgrades completed as part of the Warrnambool Line Upgrade.
The level crossings at Ayreys Reserve Road in Birregurra, Swan Marsh-Stonyford Road in Swan Marsh, Deans Creek Road in Colac and Garvoc Station Road in Garvoc were upgraded from Give-way and Stop signs and now feature boom gates, flashing lights and bells, and better train detection technology.
Crews have been working hard to deliver these level crossing upgrades which have more recently taken place under modified conditions to protect our workers and the community.
Upgrades to the four level crossings took 55 workers more than 9,000 hours to complete since works commenced in January 2020.
A further eight level crossings between Waurn Ponds and Warrnambool are being upgraded by V/Line as part of the Warrnambool Line Upgrade and are targeted for completion in the coming months.
The health and safety of our workers and the community is our key priority as we continue to deliver Regional Rail Revival, as is supporting physical distancing measures in line with current health advice.
We have strict protocols in place to protect the safety of our construction workforce, including enhanced industrial cleaning arrangements, provision of personal protective equipment and measures to reduce staff contact, including staggered shifts.

Construction on the rest of the $114 million Warrnambool Line Upgrade will be underway in mid-2020, which will allow for a fifth weekday return service between Warrnambool and Melbourne and result in better reliability for passengers along the line.
