Major upgrades to the Geelong and Warrnambool rail lines are a step closer to construction, with contractors shortlisted to deliver the multi-million-dollar projects.

Rail Projects Victoria (RPV) has shortlisted three contractors, following a competitive process to identify companies best qualified to deliver the design and construction of the upgrades.

The selected contractors, each with extensive experience in rail project delivery, are a joint venture between Coleman Rail and Lendlease Engineering, a joint venture between CPB Contractors and UGL, and Downer EDI Works.

RPV will hold technical and commercial workshops with the shortlisted contractors, after which the contractors submit detailed tenders outlining how they plan to deliver the projects.

Rail Projects Victoria will thoroughly evaluate each tender before awarding the contract to one of the three shortlisted parties later this year.

Construction on the Warrnambool Line Upgrade is targeted to begin later this year, while Geelong Line Upgrade works are targeted to begin by 2020.
