More frequent and reliable services are one step closer for Bendigo, Gippsland and Shepparton passengers, with contractors shortlisted to deliver critical upgrades on these lines.

The signalling upgrade from Bendigo to Eaglehawk and Epsom will deliver Bendigo Metro 2, enabling more frequent services to give passengers a metro-style train service.

Upgrades to the line between Pakenham and Traralgon, including track duplication, additional platforms at key stations and an extended crossing loop will reduce congestion points on the line, boosting reliability.

The signalling works as part of the Bendigo and Echuca Line Upgrade will be delivered in a package with the Gippsland Line Upgrade’s Pakenham to Traralgon upgrades, as these lines operate similar signalling systems.

Two consortia have been shortlisted to deliver these critical upgrades:

  • VicConnect, comprising UGL Limited, Decmil and Arup, and
  • CPB Contractors, John Holland, WSP and SMEC.

Stage 2 of the Shepparton Line Upgrade includes level crossing upgrades, platform extensions, new stabling and a crossing loop extension, and will allow VLocity trains to travel on the line for the first time.

Two consortia have been shortlisted to deliver these critical upgrades:

  • VicConnect, comprising UGL Limited, Decmil and Arup, and
  • A joint venture between Coleman Rail and KBR.

Contracts will be awarded in mid-2020 with construction on all three lines expected to begin late next year, subject to planning and environmental approvals.
