Let's co-design Apex Park

We’re delivering improvements to Apex Park in Stratford as part of our project to build a new bridge over the Avon River.

The improvements to Apex Park include:

  • a new BMX/pump track
  • a new nature-based playground
  • a new public artwork
  • planting new vegetation.

We’ve asked the community to help us co-design these elements and have been seeking feedback from locals, including kids, so we can understand what is important to the community.

The improvements will be built near the existing playground at Apex Park and will replace the BMX/pump track that was removed in late 2019 to make way for the new bridge over the Avon River.

The new bridge over the Avon River is part of the half-a-billion-dollar Gippsland Line Upgrade. The project will enable more frequent and reliable services for passengers by duplicating track, extending the Morwell crossing loop, upgrading level crossings and signalling, and adding second platforms at key stations along the line.

The process

The co-design process for the improvements to Apex Park allows the community to have input into what they’d like to see included in the park.

We started engaging with locals in February 2020, kicking off with a community day at Apex Park.

The day was an opportunity for the local community to have their say in the design of the key elements of the park improvements in a fun and interactive way, and talk to us about their ideas.

People unable to attend the community day had their say by completing an online survey.

We ensured local kids had a chance to influence what is included in their improved park, and visited St Patrick’s Primary School and Stratford Primary School so they can have their say.

We’re currently reviewing the feedback we received and using it to inform the development of a concept design for the park to present back to the community in the coming months.

People will be able to have their say once again, before the designs of the improvements are finalised.

Next steps

Initial designs for the improvements will be presented to the community in the coming months for further feedback, to ensure the designs meet community expectations.

We will use any further feedback to finalise the designs for the improvements, which will be unveiled at a community day later this year.

Construction on the new Avon River rail bridge and the improvements to Apex Park are scheduled for completion in early 2021.

Calling all Gippsland artists

We’re seeking a Gippsland-based artist to design a public artwork for Apex Park.

Community members voted for the theme they wanted to see reflected in the piece of public art, and the town’s lifeblood, the Avon River, emerged victorious.

Expressions of Interest for artists are open until 11:59pm Sunday 29 March 2020 and the selected artist will be determined by an advisory panel.

Gippsland-based artists can express their interest here or by calling 1800 105 105.

Stay informed

We will keep passengers and the community updated as the project progresses via information sessions, letterbox drops, e-newsletters, advertising, website updates, social media and station pop-ups.
