We are delivering improvements to Apex Park in Stratford as part of the new Avon River rail bridge.
The upgrades include:
- a new BMX/pump track
- a new nature-based playground
- a new public artwork
- planting new vegetation.
We are seeking feedback on these upgrades so we can understand what is important to the community.
The new bridge over the Avon River is part of the half-a-billion-dollar Gippsland Line Upgrade. The project will enable more frequent and reliable services for passengers by duplicating track, extending the Morwell crossing loop, upgrading level crossings and signalling, and adding second platforms at key stations along the line.
Apex Park Community Day
Thank you to the hundreds of people who attended our community day in Stratford on Saturday 8 February.
The day was an opportunity for the local community to take part in co-designing the key elements of the park upgrade, including a new nature-based playground, BMX/pump track and community artwork.
If you weren’t able to attend the community day, you can still have your say on the new nature-based playground and BMX/pump track by completing our online survey.
Initial designs for the upgrades will be presented to the community in the coming months for further feedback, before the final designs are unveiled at a community day later this year.
We are building a new BMX/pump track to replace the one which was removed at the beginning of construction.
We want to know what you would like to see in your BMX/pump track and why?
We are building a new nature-based playground that will complement the existing Shakespeare playground to the west of the new Avon River rail bridge.
We want to know the types of play equipment you would like to see as part of this new playground and why?
Planting new vegetation
We were able to reduce the construction footprint of the project to save approximately two thirds of the vegetation originally marked for removal.
Since then we have been working closely with Gippsland Indigenous Plants, East Gippsland Aboriginal Corporation and Avon Landcare Group to select, grow and supply the plants that will be used to plant new vegetation in Apex Park later in the year.
Have your say
We would like to hear your feedback on the upgrades at Apex Park by completing our survey.
Calling all Gippsland artists
We are seeking a Gippsland-based artist to design a public artwork which will be built in Apex Park, Stratford.
Community members voted for the theme they wanted to see reflected in the piece of public art, and the town’s lifeblood, the Avon River, emerged victorious.
Expressions of Interest for artists will be open until Friday 6 March and the selected artist will be determined by an advisory panel.
Gippsland-based artists can express their interest here or by calling 1800 105 105.
