Waurn Ponds Station

Waurn Ponds Station upgrade

Construction will take place from June 2020 to late 2021

Construction will start soon on the upgrade to Waurn Ponds Station, to enable more frequent and reliable services for passengers in this growing community.

Thank you for your patience while this important work is underway.

What we are doing

From mid-June we will set up a construction site at Waurn Ponds Station to prepare for the start of construction. The site will be located south
of the station near Muir Road, which will enable safe and direct access to the rail corridor.

Site preparation works include:

  • closing public access to Muir Road
  • setting up portable site offices, equipment storage areas and workforce parking
  • installing temporary fencing around the project area
  • relocating water and electricity utility services
  • tree and vegetation removal.

What to be aware of

When works start, you may notice an increase in truck movements within the area while we transport construction materials and equipment.
There will be heavy equipment at the site and in the rail corridor. The laydown area will be accessed during major works to transport materials to and from the site.

Residents around the project area may notice some noise, dust and vibration.

Muir Road closure

From 15 June, Muir Road will be closed to the public to allow construction to take place. Detours for pedestrians and cyclists will be available via Ghazeepore Road, Baanip Boulevard, Torquay Road and Heyers Road.

Minimising impacts

Dust

We use a range of measures to minimise dust from construction activities, including placing dust monitors in and around the construction site, staging works to minimise exposed areas and using water carts to wet down work areas.

Noise and vibration

We monitor noise and vibration levels to make sure they are within the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) noise control guidelines, and limit out-of-hours works as much as possible.

Vegetation removal

Works within the rail corridor can affect tree root systems and impact on vegetation stability and health. Vegetation that may pose a safety risk will be trimmed or removed as construction is carried out. We make every effort to protect native vegetation.

Where native vegetation cannot be retained, clearance will be approved by relevant authorities and will be offset in an approved location. Before being removed, vegetation is inspected for the presence of wildlife, and qualified handlers will be on site to safely rehome wildlife if needed.

Health and safety

The health and safety of our workers and the community is our key priority as we deliver the upgrades to Waurn Ponds Station, as is supporting physical distancing measures in line with current health advice.

We have strict protocols in place to protect the safety of our construction workforce, including enhanced industrial cleaning arrangements, provision of personal protective equipment and measures to reduce staff contact, including staggered shifts.
