Waurn Ponds Station car park and signalling works

Waurn Ponds Station car park and signalling works

24-hour works – Friday 9 April 2021 to Monday 19 April 2021

Works are progressing on the track duplication and pedestrian overpass as part of the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade, to enable more frequent and reliable train services for passengers in this growing community.

Thank you for your patience while this important work is underway.

What we are doing

We’re continuing work on the second track at Waurn Ponds Station and upgrading the signalling system.

Works will include:

  • earthworks and drainage along the rail corridor
  • removing rail track along the rail corridor
  • laying rail track including ballast, rail tamping and welding
  • drilling and welding to install signalling equipment
  • laying sleepers east of Bickford Road, west of Ghazeepore Road and from the west of Angelsea Road to the east of Willowite Road.

The works will take place during the day and night from 11pm Friday 9 April 2021 until 4am Monday 19 April 2021.

What to be aware of

There will be an increase in construction works, including noise, dust and additional lighting, which may be disruptive during the night. We’ll minimise these impacts by:

  • turning off equipment when not in use
  • portable lighting will be directed away from residences and focused on the work area, where possible
  • monitoring noise.

There will be machinery, heavy vehicles and workers within the rail corridor and at the Ghazeepore Road level crossing.

Minimising impacts

Dust

We use a range of measures to minimise dust from construction activities, including placing dust monitors in and around the construction site, staging works to minimise exposed areas and the use of water carts to wet down work areas.

Noise and vibration

To minimise potential noise and vibration impacts we monitor noise and vibration levels to make sure they are within the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) noise control guidelines and limit out-of-hours works.

What we’ve been up to

Recent works as part of the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade have included:

  • opening a new section of the car park and new entrance at Rossack Drive
  • closing the entrance and middle car park to complete piling for the pedestrian overpass, lifts and ramps
  • starting work on the second track
  • installing communications and power supply for new signalling equipment between Ghazeepore Road to the east of Torquay Road in Waurn Ponds.

Plan your journey

Coaches will replace trains on sections of the Geelong and Warrnambool lines from Saturday 10 April until Sunday 18 April 2021 while we carry out work on the line.

For more information about V/Line coach replacement services, please contact the Public Transport Victoria call centre: 1800 800 007 (6am to midnight daily – all night Friday and Saturday) or visit vline.com.au

February 2021

Works are underway on the track duplication and pedestrian overpass as part of the Waurn Ponds Station upgrade, to enable more frequent and reliable train services for passengers in this growing community.

What we are doing

We’re opening the new eastern section (area 1) of the carpark and entrance at Rossack Drive.

We’ve closed the entrance and area 2 of the Waurn Ponds Station car park and changed the access points to the station platform to continue works on the new pedestrian overpass, second platform and track.

Access to the station car park will be maintained at all times and will be via the new entrances off Sugargum Drive and Rossack Drive.

Works will include:

  • piling for the pedestrian overpass, lifts and ramps
  • pouring concrete for the new platform
  • installing pre-cast concrete panels for the new platform
  • track duplication works.

We’ll also continue working in the rail corridor between Ghazeepore Road and east of Torquay Road in Waurn Ponds to install communications and the power supply required for new signalling equipment.

Works will include:

  • non-destructive digging and trenching
  • laying underground cabling
  • installing temporary fencing around the construction area to maintain safety — vegetation removal as required.

Works will take place Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and Saturday from 8am to 1pm.

What to be aware of

These works are expected to be low impact, however you may notice an increase in noise and dust. There will be machinery, heavy vehicles and workers around the station and within the rail corridor, so please be mindful and observe all safety signage in place.

Other works

As part of the staged upgrade of the Geelong Line, we are continuing site investigations to inform planning and design for the South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Duplication.

Cultural heritage site investigations will be taking place along the rail corridor from South Geelong to Waurn Ponds Station to help inform the Cultural Heritage Management Plan (CHMP) for the project.

These investigations will identify any Aboriginal cultural heritage present in the vicinity and the measures to manage and protect them.

Investigations will include:

  • manual excavation of sites using hand tools, shovels and sieves
  • occasional low impact drilling or machinery if required.

These works will take place in the rail corridor between Waurn Ponds and South Geelong over the next few weeks.
