Temporary traffic changes at Gillies Street, Wendouree
Posted: 28 Nov 2019
We’re laying new track through the Gillies Street level crossing in Wendouree, as major construction on the half-a-billion-dollar Ballarat Line Upgrade approaches completion.
From Saturday 7 December to Monday 9 December, Gillies Street will be temporarily closed between Howitt and Gregory streets for day and night works.
Detour routes and traffic management will be in place, with northbound traffic taking Gregory Street to Forest Street, and southbound following Howitt Street to Forest Street.
Road users are being asked to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and consider alternative routes.
The works will include realigning the rail line and laying new track across the level crossing, rebuilding and asphalting the road approaches the level crossing, and new line markings.
The Wendouree Station upgrade includes a new platform, second track and an accessible overpass.
This will create enough space for trains to pass each other at Wendouree Station.
It will fix the current problem that sees delayed services from Melbourne terminate at Ballarat and passengers forced onto replacement coaches because trains can’t pass in this section.
Major construction on the Ballarat Line Upgrade will be complete at the end of 2019. A period of commissioning will follow next year before the introduction of more new services in 2020.
