Plan ahead for service changes in January
Posted: 23 Dec 2019
Vital work on the half-a-billion dollar Gippsland Line Upgrade will continue in January, helping to deliver better and more reliable services for Gippsland passengers.
While works are carried out on the Metro Tunnel Project, crews will take the opportunity to build embankments for new track that will connect the new bridge to the existing line, and improve drainage structures between Morwell and Bairnsdale.
V/Line will undertake track maintenance along the line during this time. This critical work will ensure trains can continue to operate efficiently and reliably.
From Thursday 2 January to Thursday 30 January coaches will replace trains between Bairnsdale, Traralgon and Southern Cross Station and passengers are asked to allow up to an extra 90 minutes travel time.
Travel will be free for Gippsland passengers during this period and passengers can plan their journey at ptv.vic.gov.au.
The new bridge and drainage upgrades are being delivered as part of the half-a-billion dollar Gippsland Line Upgrade, an unprecedented investment in better train services for Gippsland, which has already delivered benefits for passengers.
The project has already delivered benefits to passengers through level crossing upgrades that have enabled more comfortable and modern VLocity trains to run to Bairnsdale.
Once complete, the new $95 million Avon River bridge will allow trains to travel at up to 90km/h instead of the 10km/h limit currently in place on the existing bridge.
