The Australian and Victorian governments have invested more than $4 billion in Regional Rail Revival. The program is upgrading every regional passenger rail line in Victoria and creating 3000 jobs and supplier opportunities.
Regional Rail Revival has already delivered significant benefits including:
- VLocity trains to Bairnsdale, Shepparton and Albury/Wodonga for the first time
- Construction of a new rail bridge over the Avon River at Stratford which allows trains to travel at up to 90km/h, no longer needing to slow to 10km/h in this section
- Track upgrades on the Echuca Line, increasing the maximum speed of trains from 80km/h to 130km/h between Epsom and Goornong
- Upgrades on the Ouyen to Murrayville Line to remove most speed and heat restrictions
- Track upgrades on the Ararat to Maryborough Line allowing an increased load capacity to 21 tonne axle loading (TAL) for all wagons

Regional Victoria
Victoria is growing faster than any other state. Our regions are home to about one quarter of Victoria’s population and play a vital role in the state’s prosperity.
Regional Victoria contributes more than $65 billion to the economy annually, accounts for almost one third of the state’s exports and attracts more than 13 million tourists each year. It is also home to one third of the state’s small businesses.
As the population and local economies of regional Victoria grow, the rail network must keep up with changing travel needs.
Regional Rail Revival is a critical part of delivering the objectives of the Victorian Government’s Regional Network Development Plan.
