Preview of Ballarat line construction blitz

Posted: 24 Jan 2019

Here is a taste of the work we’ll be doing from 31 January to 3 February to improve the Ballarat line with coaches to replace trains between Ballarat/Wendouree and Southern Cross Station.

Coaches will replace trains between Ballarat/Wendouree and Southern Cross Station from Thursday 31 January to Sunday 3 February while crews work around the clock.  Ararat and Maryborough line trains will continue to run to and from Ballarat, connecting with coaches to and from Southern Cross Station.

Passengers are asked to allow an extra 45 minutes travel time and to plan their journey at the V/Line website or by calling 1800 800 007.

A temporary timetable will be available at staffed V/Line stations and online.  While trains are not running on the Ballarat line, work taking place will include:

  • laying track and installing 800 tonnes of ballast (crushed rock) for passing loops at Millbrook and Ballan
  • preparing to install signalling between Caroline Springs and Melton
  • construction on the new Cobblebank Station, and a new roof canopy for the Rockbank Station building
  • building foundations for columns to support the new platform and overpass at Bacchus Marsh Station.

When the upgrade is complete later this year passengers will have modern, accessible stations and the project will enable more frequent and reliable services.
